THE PUPPY

I would expect to see the puppy at home with its mother and littermates. I would like to see them in a domestic setting that is busy enough to reflect family life.  I would expect to see toys and small obstacles like cardboard boxes in their run which would provide mental stimulation. I would expect that the mum and pups be happy, clean and content and that mother would not show aggression or fear when being approached, while making allowances for maternal protectiveness. An aggressive fearful mother will more than likely have aggressive fearful puppies.

I would ask if this was how they were reared and if that was normal procedure for the breeder. I would ask how often they were handled and by whom, adults only, or children.

I would hope that the breeder would be interested in me and my home environment and ask if I had a puppy or dog before and try to find out if I am capable of looking after it.

If it is a pedigree puppy I would ask for information on the health of the puppy and its parents, worming details etc. and copies of any  medical tests on the parents and puppy. I would also ask for pedigree details. If it is a cross breed it may not be possible to have information on the father! I would also ask for feeding details, and information on where to buy whatever diet puppy needed.

I would expect to see the puppy feeding well and be alert and playful with its brothers and sisters. He should have bright inquisitive eyes. If puppy is about five weeks old I would ask and expect to be allowed to pick it up. He should be free of any visible parasites, with no evidence of nose, eye discharge or diarrhoea.

To live in a domestic environment and for the puppy to be a pet I would choose an easy going confident puppy I would like to see it approach me with confidence but not confident enough to jump all over me and nip me.

I would like it to follow me when encouraged but not be too enthusiastic and get underfoot.

I would like it to accept being stroked and handled without either too much resistance or acceptance.

These would be guides to the temperament I would be hoping for, however I do not think that there is any fail safe way to determine his future temperament.

The lifestyle he enters into and the personality of his owner will also have a huge influence on him.

The imperfect puppy with the good owner is more likely to have a better future than the perfect puppy with the bad owner.
